I immediately loved working with flies. They fascinated me, and followed me around in my dreams. ~ Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard
For over a hundred years, geneticists have studied the humble fruit fly: the Drosophila melanogaster has contributed greatly to our knowledge of human genetics.
Outside the lab, though, the tiny flies are nothing but annoying.
But don’t worry!
You can get rid of pesky fruit flies without resorting to dangerous chemicals. It’s easy to make a fruit fly trap that will eradicate your pest population quickly.
You’ll need:
-a small bowl or ramekin
-an elastic
-a piece of plastic wrap
–1/4 cup of wine or juice
Directions:
1.Pour the wine into the bowl.
2. Pull the plastic wrap over the bowl to create a tight cover.
3. Secure the plastic around the bowl with the elastic.
4. Poke a small hole in the center of the plastic cover.
5. Place the trap on your counter.
6. Remove any other potential sources of food for the flies, and wait.
The flies will soon discover your trap and within a couple of days, your kitchen will be fruit fly free.
Problem solved.

Really and truly and actually true? I hate fruit flies. We are living in Nebraska temporarily and have seen fruit flies unlike any we had in Minnesota. They’re gone now due to cooler temperatures, but I’ll give this a whirl next year if they’re bad in Colorado. Thanks!

Hi 🙂 Yes, really, truly and actually true 🙂 I use this trap every time and it does the trick. It works best with white wine (and I don’t feel as guilty because I figure the flies are happy…)

Nice trap. There’s a similar one we make with apple cider vinegar. We have terrible problems with fruit flies in September.

Hi:) I always end up with some at least once in the winter, too. I’ve used cider vinegar with this trap, but I find white wine works best.
